    I went the solar route and I don't regret it, but I'll be honest — the salesperson oversold the savings. My bill went from about $190/month to around $60, which is great, but I also had to add attic insulation afterward to get there. If I'd done the insulation first I probably would have been able to get away with a smaller (cheaper) solar system. Do the building envelope stuff first. That's the lesson.

    1962 cape cod. We did a utility-subsidized energy audit ($100 after rebate) and it completely changed our plan. We were about to replace the furnace because it seemed old. The auditor told us the furnace was actually fine — the real problem was almost zero insulation in the knee walls and a crawl space that was hemorrhaging cold air.
