Why electricity bills spike — and why it's almost never a mystery once you know where to look
Your electricity bill is a product of two things: how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity your home consumed, and how much your utility charges per kWh. When a bill doubles, one or both of those numbers changed. Most people assume a billing error, but the evidence consistently points to three more likely causes: a major appliance working much harder than it should (usually HVAC or a water heater), a rate increase from the utility company, or a significant new source of consumption — like an electric vehicle, a space heater left running, or a second refrigerator moved into a garage.
HVAC systems are by far the most common culprit. Heating and cooling typically account for 40–50% of a home's total electricity use. When an air conditioner or heat pump develops a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor, or a dirty coil, it runs almost continuously trying to reach a temperature it can never quite hit — consuming two or three times its normal energy in the process. Similarly, a water heater with a broken thermostat or a corroded heating element can quietly run for hours longer than it should every single day.
The second thing to rule out is your utility's rate structure. Many utilities charge tiered rates, meaning the price per kWh increases as you use more. If something pushed your usage just over a tier threshold — a hot month, a houseguest, a newly added appliance — the cost can jump disproportionately to the actual usage increase. Check your bill carefully: it should show both kWh consumed and the rate applied. If the usage looks similar to last year but the cost is dramatically higher, call your utility and ask specifically whether your rate tier or rate schedule changed.

My January bill was $340 — the previous January it was $160. I went through every possible explanation and finally had an HVAC tech come out. Turns out the heat pump had been running in emergency heat mode for over a month without us realizing it. Emergency heat uses resistance coils instead of the heat pump mechanism, which is dramatically less efficient. One service call and we were back to normal the next cycle.

I spent three weeks convinced it was a billing error. Called the utility twice. Finally bought a $30 plug-in watt meter and started testing appliances one by one. The old chest freezer in the garage was drawing over 400 watts constantly — it should be drawing about 85 when the compressor runs. Sealed a bad door gasket first, didn't help. Ended up replacing the freezer. Problem solved, and I probably should have replaced that thing years ago anyway.
