Found a GFCI outlet in there with the Reset button slightly popped out. Pressed it in, everything came back on immediately. Literally 90 seconds of work. Half the outlets in my living room and the hallway stopped working. I checked the breaker panel and everything looked fine to me — all the switches looked the same. Then I read about the "mid-position" thing: a tripped breaker doesn't go all the way off, it just goes to the middle. Sure enough, one breaker was ever so slightly out of line. Switched it off then back on firmly and the outlets came right back. The panel looked "fine" because I didn't know what a tripped breaker actually looked like.

Checked all the GFCIs — none were tripped. Checked the panel — breaker was fine. Reset everything anyway and one of the two dead outlets came back, but the other one in the same room stayed dead. Ended up calling an electrician who found that the outlet that was still dead had a backstab wire connection that had worked itself loose over the years. He re-terminated it properly with a screw terminal and it's been solid ever since. Cost me $110 for the service call. Wish I'd caught it sooner, but at least I ruled out the easy fixes first so I didn't feel like I was being taken for a ride.
