Your electrical panel is the gatekeeper for every circuit in your home — and it can fail quietly
Your electrical panel — sometimes called a breaker box or load center — receives power from the utility and distributes it to every circuit in your home. Each circuit breaker inside it serves two jobs: delivering electricity to a zone of your home, and tripping (shutting off) if that circuit is overloaded or develops a fault. When breakers work correctly, you barely notice the panel exists. When they don't, the symptoms can range from mildly annoying to genuinely dangerous.
Panels wear out over decades of use. The internal components — particularly the breaker contacts and bimetal strips that sense heat — degrade with age and repeated trips. Some older panel brands, including Federal Pacific Electric (Stab-Lok), Zinsco, and Pushmatic, have documented failure modes that cause breakers to not trip when they should, which is the one thing a breaker absolutely must do. Beyond age and brand, the bigger issue for many households is capacity: a panel installed in the 1970s for a 1,400-square-foot home with a gas range and no air conditioning may be completely overwhelmed by a modern household with EV chargers, heat pumps, and a home office.
The tricky part is that a failing panel doesn't always announce itself dramatically. Breakers can be slow to trip rather than failing entirely. Connections can loosen over years of thermal expansion and contraction without sparking visibly. This is why electricians say the absence of obvious symptoms isn't the same as a clean bill of health — especially if your panel is more than 25 years old or carries a brand name with a known safety record.

The job of a circuit breaker is to interrupt power when a fault occurs — preventing wires from overheating and potentially starting a fire inside your walls. A breaker that trips too easily is frustrating. A breaker that fails to trip when it should is the scenario that causes house fires. The U.S. Fire Administration attributes roughly 51,000 home electrical fires annually to electrical failures and malfunctions, with wiring and related equipment among the leading causes. A panel that cannot reliably interrupt a fault is a direct contributor to that risk.
There's also an insurance dimension that catches many homeowners off guard. A growing number of homeowners' insurers decline to write or renew policies on homes with Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panels — or charge significantly higher premiums. If you're planning to sell your home, a flagged panel will almost certainly appear in the buyer's inspection report and become a negotiating point. Addressing it proactively is almost always cheaper than addressing it under deadline pressure.

We had a Federal Pacific panel that two different electricians told us was "probably fine." Third one actually opened it up and showed us a breaker that wouldn't trip manually — it was basically fused in the on position. We replaced the whole thing. I wish we hadn't waited as long as we did.

Our panel was 38 years old and we were running the dryer, AC, and dishwasher at the same time almost every day. Breakers started tripping every few weeks. Electrician said we were pulling more amps than the panel was designed for. We upgraded to 200A and the problem completely went away — also got two extra circuits out of it for the garage.

Bought a house with a Zinsco panel and my insurer said they'd cancel my policy if I didn't replace it within 90 days.
