Why outlets go dead — and why it's usually not random at all
When outlets stop working "for no reason," there almost always is a reason — it's just hidden inside your electrical system. The two most common culprits are a tripped circuit breaker and a tripped GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet. Both are safety mechanisms that cut power deliberately when they detect a problem, and both are designed to be reset. A tripped GFCI is particularly easy to miss because a single GFCI outlet can be wired to protect multiple other outlets downstream — sometimes in completely different rooms — so when it trips, several outlets go dark at once and none of them look obviously tripped.
Less commonly, the problem is a loose or failed connection inside a specific outlet, junction box, or at the panel. Three outlets in my bedroom and hallway all stopped working at the same time after a thunderstorm. I checked the breaker panel twice and nothing looked tripped. In my case it wasn't a GFCI — it was a breaker that looked fine but was actually in that halfway position. I kept checking the panel and didn't see anything obviously off. A neighbor who used to work in construction told me to push every breaker firmly all the way to the off position first, then back to on. Did that on one breaker and the outlets came back. The breaker had tripped to a middle position that looks almost identical to the "on" position unless you're looking carefully.

My situation was more complicated — I reset the GFCI and it tripped again immediately. Did that a few times before I realized that was telling me something was actually wrong, not just a random trip. Called an electrician and he found a loose wire connection inside an outlet box in my garage that was arcing. He said it was a genuine fire hazard and I was glad I didn't just keep resetting it. So: if it resets fine and stays on, great. If it keeps tripping, stop resetting it and get someone in.
