Common responses that make things worse — or waste critical time
When a hamster won't wake up, the instinct to act quickly is right — but several very common responses are either ineffective or actively dangerous.

Using a heat lamp, heating pad, or hot water to warm the hamster quickly — A hamster in torpor has impaired circulation and thermoregulation; rapid external heat causes burns, dehydration, and can send the animal into shock. Always use slow body heat — your own hands or chest — never an artificial heat source applied directly.

Waiting it out for a day or two to "see if it wakes up on its own" — A hamster in torpor that is left in a cold environment will not spontaneously recover; it will continue to decline. Prolonged torpor without food or water causes dehydration and organ stress. The moment you notice unresponsiveness, act — do not monitor and wait.

Assuming it must be hibernation and that hibernation is natural and harmless — This is the single most dangerous misconception. Domestic hamsters have not been selectively bred for safe hibernation; the torpor they enter is an emergency stress response, not a healthy seasonal cycle. Treating it as normal delays warming and veterinary assessment and costs animals their lives every year.

Force-feeding water or food to a torpid hamster — A hamster that is not fully conscious cannot swallow safely and is at serious risk of aspiration. Wait until the animal is fully alert and moving under its own power before offering any food or water, however concerned you are about dehydration.

Found my Syrian, Biscuit, completely unresponsive on a Sunday morning in January — I genuinely thought he was dead. The spare room he lives in had dropped to about 12°C overnight. I held him inside my jumper against my chest for about 45 minutes and he started twitching and then shuffling around. I cried with relief. I've since put a thermometer in his room and a small oil radiator on a timer. Haven't had a scare since.

Our daughter's hamster Peanut went floppy and unresponsive and she was absolutely distraught. Room wasn't especially cold — maybe 17°C — so I was less certain it was just torpor. I did the hand-warming thing while my wife called the vet. The vet said to bring him in if he hadn't responded in 30 minutes. He did start to come round after about 20 minutes but we took him in anyway. Turned out he was also slightly underweight and the vet caught a minor dental issue we'd missed. Very glad we called.

I warmed my hamster Mocha up and she did revive, but she seemed wobbly and low-energy for about three days afterward. I wish I'd taken her to the vet at that point instead of just monitoring at home. She pulled through fine in the end but I learned you really can't just warm them up and consider the job done — you need to keep watching carefully for a few days and not hesitate to get professional eyes on them if something seems off.
