Most of the advice people follow after fish die is well-intentioned but targets the wrong problem or actively makes things worse. Here's what to skip.

  • Replacing dead fish without testing the water first — Putting new fish into the same uncycled, ammonia-toxic water just kills more fish. Until you know your water is safe, new fish are not a solution — they're casualties waiting to happen.
  • Relying on dip-strip test kits to confirm water is "fine" — Dip strips are notoriously inaccurate, especially at low concentrations of ammonia and nitrite — precisely where the difference between safe and lethal lies. Many fish keepers have been told their water is fine by a strip test while their fish were being poisoned. Use a liquid kit.
  • Doing a complete tank clean or full water change to "start fresh" — A 100% water change removes the beneficial bacterial colonies living in your filter and substrate — the very biology that keeps ammonia under control. This resets your cycle to zero and often triggers a new spike that kills whatever fish remain. Partial water changes (25–30%) are the safe approach.
  • Adding aquarium salt as a catch-all remedy — Salt has legitimate uses in specific situations (certain diseases, osmoregulation support for some species) but does nothing to address ammonia toxicity, and some species — particularly scaleless fish and many plants — are harmed by it.     My problem turned out to be chloramine in my tap water — my city had switched from chlorine and my old dechlorinator didn't neutralise chloramine.     Water quality was fine — genuinely, I tested properly and everything was in range. Stopped losing fish once I addressed water quality as a starting point, but I did still lose two more before I figured out I also had a white spot (ich) infection that I'd missed. The water fix was the right first step and stopped the main losses, but if your fish have any physical symptoms at all — tiny white dots, clamped fins, flashing against the glass — you may have both problems at once. Worth looking closely at your remaining fish before assuming water chemistry is the only issue.
