What people try first that doesn't actually fix yard flooding
Most of these approaches feel logical, are widely recommended in passing, and will cost you time and money without touching the underlying problem.

Planting more grass or sod over the wet area — Turfgrass cannot survive in soil that stays saturated for more than a day or two at a stretch; putting down new sod before fixing drainage guarantees you'll be replacing it again within a season, having solved nothing.

Adding sand to clay soil to "improve drainage" — This is one of the most persistent landscaping myths: mixing sand into clay at typical home-improvement ratios creates a cement-like mixture that drains worse than either material alone; the only soil amendment that reliably improves clay drainage is organic compost worked in at volume.

A landscaper came out and told me the previous owners had leveled the yard by cutting, which left a bowl. We brought in six cubic yards of topsoil and regraded over two weekends — the difference was immediate and honestly kind of shocking. First real rain after, the water actually moved. Would do it again without hesitation; just wish I'd done it three years sooner.

Our yard sits lower than the neighbor's on both sides, so regrading wasn't really an option — the water just had nowhere to go. A drainage contractor installed a 40-foot French drain running along the back fence to daylight at the street curb. It cost $3,200 and took one day. We've had three major rain events since and the yard drains completely within a couple of hours each time. The contractor also caught a gas line the locator had missed, which made me very glad I didn't DIY this one.

I went the rain garden route because I wanted something that would also help the environment a bit. Dug a shallow basin in the lowest corner, filled it with native sedges and swamp milkweed, and it handles normal rain beautifully — empties within 24 hours every time. But during a really heavy storm this past November it still overflowed onto the patio. I've since added a small overflow berm directing excess to the street, which helped, but I'd be honest with anyone considering this: a rain garden handles typical rain events very well but may not be enough if your area gets intense downpours regularly.
