Why your yard holds water instead of draining it
When rain hits your yard, it has three options: soak into the soil, run off the surface toward a lower point, or pool in place. A healthy lawn with well-structured soil handles most rainfall by absorbing it quickly — water moves down through the soil profile and either feeds plant roots or continues into the water table. If your yard floods every time it rains, something is blocking that process. The three most common culprits are heavy clay soil that doesn't absorb water fast enough, a yard that's graded (sloped) toward the house or toward a natural low spot with no exit, and a drainage system that's absent, undersized, or blocked.
Clay soil is the most widespread root cause in suburban yards across the United States. Unlike sandy or loam soil, clay particles are extremely fine and pack together tightly, leaving almost no room for water to move through. Many housing developments make this worse: builders strip the topsoil during construction (the layer with the best drainage), compact the subsoil with heavy equipment, then lay a thin layer of sod on top. The result is a yard that sheds water like a parking lot. Soil compaction from foot traffic and lawn mowing compounds the problem over time.
Grading — the slope and shape of your yard's surface — determines where water goes when it can't soak in. The standard recommendation from landscape engineers is a minimum slope of 2% (about 2 inches of drop for every 10 feet) sloping away from your foundation. Yards that are flat, bowl-shaped, or that slope back toward the house will collect water with nowhere to go. Neighboring properties, driveways, and impervious surfaces like patios can also funnel additional runoff into your yard, overwhelming whatever natural drainage exists.

What happens when you leave a flooding yard alone
A yard that floods occasionally after an unusually heavy storm and drains within 24 hours is mostly a cosmetic nuisance. But if your yard floods every time it rains — even in moderate rainfall — and water lingers for more than 48 hours, the consequences compound over time. Standing water suffocates grass roots and creates ideal conditions for fungal disease, which is why chronically wet yards typically develop dead patches, moss, and algae. More seriously, water that pools against or near your foundation puts continuous hydrostatic pressure on basement walls and can work its way through cracks, leading to water intrusion and eventually structural damage. Soil erosion from surface runoff also gradually reshapes your yard in ways that make the problem worse each season.

We had a low spot in the back corner that turned into a small lake after every rain. I tried aerating and adding topsoil two summers in a row — helped a little but didn't solve it. Finally had a landscaper install a catch basin and run a pipe to the storm drain at the street. That was eight months ago and we haven't had standing water since, even in the really heavy storms we got in February.

Our problem turned out to be the grading — the previous owners had added a patio that tilted the whole back yard toward the house. We had a contractor regrade and extend two of the downspouts with flexible pipe out to the side yard, and it made a huge difference. I was quoted $4,200 and thought that was a lot, but after one season with no water in the crawl space I feel like it was absolutely worth it. Wish we'd done it years ago.

I went the DIY route and dug a French drain myself along the side of the house where water was coming in. Watched about a dozen videos, rented a trencher, and spent a weekend on it. Cost me about $400 in materials. It handles normal rain fine now, but I'll be honest — in the really heavy Pacific Northwest downpours it still gets a bit overwhelmed. Probably need a bigger outlet pipe. Not a perfect fix but a real improvement for the money.
