Most of these approaches are popular because they feel intuitive or "natural," but the evidence consistently shows they don't solve the problem and several actively damage your lawn.

Spraying white vinegar or apple cider vinegar on lawn weeds — Household vinegar (5% acetic acid) is a non-selective contact herbicide: it scorches the leaf tissue of whatever plant it touches, including your grass, leaving brown dead patches alongside the dead weed. It also does not kill the root system, so most perennial weeds regrow within weeks. Using it broadly across a lawn is one of the fastest ways to create bare patches that are immediately colonized by the next round of weeds.

Applying a non-selective herbicide like glyphosate (Roundup) across the lawn — Glyphosate kills everything it contacts — weeds and grass alike. It has no selectivity between turfgrass and broadleaf plants. Using it in a lawn setting will leave dead grass patches that take months to recover and create ideal bare-soil conditions for weed re-establishment. I had dandelions and clover absolutely everywhere — probably 40% of my front lawn was weed at this point. Picked up a concentrate of Ortho Weed B Gon, spot-sprayed on a calm morning in late September when temps were around 68°F. Within two weeks, the dandelions were curling and brown. By week four they were gone. I overseeded the bare spots right after and the grass filled in nicely before winter. First spring in three years where my lawn actually looks like a lawn.

I was skeptical about using any herbicide because I have dogs, but I read the label carefully and waited the 48-hour re-entry period before letting them back on the treated area. Used a three-way selective herbicide on the broadleaf weeds (mostly clover and oxalis), followed up with aeration and overseeding. My lawn is thicker than it's ever been. The key thing nobody tells you: the overseeding after is just as important as the herbicide itself — without it, the bare spots just fill back up with weeds.

The selective herbicide worked great on the dandelions and henbit, but I still have nutsedge coming up in patches and nothing I've sprayed has touched it. Turns out nutsedge is actually a sedge — not a broadleaf weed — and three-way herbicides don't work on it. I've since learned you need a product with halosulfuron or sulfentrazone specifically for nutsedge, which I'm trying this fall. Lesson learned: know what weed you're actually dealing with before you buy anything.
