Why insulation problems are invisible — until your bill arrives
Insulation works by slowing the movement of heat. In winter, heat generated inside your home wants to escape outward through every surface — your walls, ceiling, floor, and rim joists. In summer, the process reverses and outdoor heat pushes in. When insulation is thin, missing, or degraded, that heat transfer happens faster than your heating and cooling system can compensate for, so it runs longer, works harder, and costs more to do the same job. None of this is visible from inside a finished room, which is why so many homeowners simply don't know.
Insulation performance is measured in R-value — a number that tells you how strongly a material resists heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the barrier. Most building codes set a minimum, but "minimum" and "adequate" are not the same thing. A home built in 1985 to code may have R-11 in its walls and R-19 in its attic. Current Department of Energy recommendations for cold climates call for R-49 to R-60 in the attic alone. That gap is enormous, and it shows up every month on your utility bill.
Compounding the problem: insulation degrades. Fiberglass batts can settle and compress over decades, reducing their effective R-value. Blown cellulose settles too. Moisture intrusion — even a slow, unnoticed roof leak — can ruin a section of attic insulation entirely. So even a home that was adequately insulated when built may be meaningfully under-performing today.
Under-insulation shows up differently in different homes
The same root problem — not enough thermal resistance — can produce very different symptoms depending on where your insulation is weakest and what climate you live in.
What happens if you leave an under-insulated home alone
An under-insulated home doesn't suddenly break. It just costs you more to live in, year after year, in a way that's easy to rationalize away ("maybe it's just a cold winter"). The financial drain is real but gradual. More importantly, some insulation failures — particularly in attics and crawl spaces — create conditions for moisture buildup that can lead to mold growth and structural wood rot over time. These are problems that become dramatically more expensive the longer they go unaddressed.
The good news: the attic is the highest-leverage place to add insulation in most homes, and it's also the cheapest and easiest. Unlike wall insulation, attic insulation doesn't require opening up finished surfaces. A single weekend project — or a few hours with a contractor — can meaningfully change how your home performs.

I climbed up into the attic expecting it to be fine — we bought the house in 2019 and assumed it had been updated. There was maybe 4 inches of old fiberglass batts up there, completely uneven, with bare spots near the eaves. The energy auditor told me I had about R-14 when my climate zone calls for R-49. We added blown-in cellulose on top and our gas bill the following month dropped by nearly $90 compared to the same month last year. I honestly couldn't believe it was that significant.

Our upstairs was always miserable in summer — like 10 degrees warmer than downstairs — and I assumed it was just the layout. We had a home energy audit done through our utility company (it was subsidized, only cost us $99), and the thermal camera showed almost no insulation in the knee walls at the sides of the second floor. That was the culprit. We added rigid foam behind those knee walls ourselves over a weekend. Not a perfect fix, but the difference this past summer was real.

Just want to share a cautionary note: I assumed my insulation was fine because the house "didn't feel drafty." Turns out drafts and insulation are two different problems. The house wasn't drafty — there were no gaps — but the walls had essentially no insulation in them, just the original 1962 construction. The only way I found out was during a renovation when we opened a wall. Air sealing and insulation are related but not the same thing, and you can have one without the other.
