We had one CO detector on the main floor and thought we were covered. After reading about the basement rule, I bought two more and put one in the basement near the furnace area (but not right next to it) and one in the upstairs hallway. Two weeks later the basement unit alarmed at 3am — turned out our furnace heat exchanger had a crack. Technician said it was leaking CO at a low but cumulative level. The main floor detector never went off. I shudder to think about the upstairs.

I have an all-electric house but an attached two-car garage. I always assumed I was fine with no CO detectors. After reading that garages are a major source even with electric homes (because I still have a gas lawnmower and guests sometimes park cars), I put a plug-in unit in the hallway that connects the garage to the house. Nothing alarming yet, but I feel like I'm actually covered now — and it cost me $28. The peace of mind-to-dollar ratio is absurd.

I replaced all three of our detectors based on this advice — checked the back of each one and they were all 9 years old, which I never would have thought to check. The frustrating part: I bought combination smoke/CO units to consolidate, and the interconnect wiring between units was more complicated than I expected with our older home's wiring. The units work fine as standalone alarms but I couldn't get the interconnect feature working without an electrician quote of $280. I'll probably get the electrician in eventually, but the standalone coverage is still better than what I had. Worth doing, just budget more time if you're in an older home.
