Carbon monoxide is produced by combustion — and it gives no warning on its own
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced whenever something burns — natural gas, propane, oil, wood, charcoal, or gasoline. In a properly functioning, well-ventilated appliance, CO is produced in tiny amounts and dispersed safely. The problem arises when combustion is incomplete, ventilation is blocked or inadequate, or a fuel-burning appliance malfunctions. In those situations, CO can accumulate indoors to dangerous concentrations without any visible or smellable sign that anything is wrong.
The reason this matters is that CO binds to hemoglobin in your blood far more effectively than oxygen does, gradually displacing it. At low levels, symptoms mimic a flu or headache — easily dismissed. At higher concentrations, especially during sleep, a person can become incapacitated and unable to self-rescue before losing consciousness. A detector's job is to alarm before concentrations reach that threshold, giving occupants time to leave and ventilate.
If your home has any fuel-burning appliance — a gas furnace, gas water heater, gas range, wood-burning fireplace, oil boiler, or an attached garage where a car engine might run — you have a potential CO source. All-electric homes with none of these have very low risk, but a single gas appliance or attached garage changes that calculus substantially.

The cases that turn fatal almost always happen at night, when occupants are asleep and unable to notice early symptoms or smell anything out of the ordinary — because there is nothing to smell.
The encouraging flip side is that the intervention is simple and cheap. A working detector in the right location gives you the warning window you need. The detector doesn't prevent CO from forming — it just makes sure you know about it in time to act. That's a straightforward problem with a straightforward fix, which is why experts consistently list CO detectors alongside smoke alarms as baseline home safety equipment rather than an optional upgrade.
According to the CDC, carbon monoxide poisoning accounts for more than 400 non-fire-related deaths and approximately 100,000 emergency department visits in the United States annually. The majority occur in residential settings, and the risk is highest in homes with gas appliances, attached garages, and older or poorly maintained heating equipment. We had a gas furnace serviced last fall and the technician asked where our CO detectors were. I pointed to the one on the main floor. He told me it was from 2015 and almost certainly had a dead sensor — it would still beep on low battery but wouldn't detect CO. Replaced it that week and put a second one in the upstairs hallway outside the bedrooms. Never would have thought to check the manufacture date.

All-electric apartment, no gas anything — I spent an embarrassing amount of time second-guessing whether I needed one at all. Ended up getting one anyway because there's an attached parking structure below the building. Turns out that's actually a real pathway for CO to enter living spaces. I put it near the bedroom door on the first floor, which is apparently the right call for my layout.

Had a detector go off at 2am during a cold snap. Assumed it was a false alarm because we'd had no issues before. Called the fire department anyway and they found a cracked heat exchanger in our 18-year-old gas furnace leaking CO into the air supply. The technician said he sees this several times a winter. I'd always thought CO detectors were kind of optional — not anymore.
