What people try first — and why it doesn't stop ice dams
Most of the popular ice dam "solutions" treat the symptom rather than the cause, which is why homeowners who try them keep having the same problem year after year.

Salting the gutters or laying calcium chloride on the roof — Salt and calcium chloride can melt narrow channels through existing ice to let water drain, but they don't prevent new ice from forming, and they corrode metal gutters, stain shingles, and damage downspouts with repeated use — you're paying to cause damage that doesn't fix the problem.

Installing heat cables and assuming the job is done — Heat cables are a mitigation tool, not a solution: they consume electricity all winter, require correct zigzag installation to work at all, and fail entirely if there's a power outage during a storm — while doing nothing to reduce the heat escaping your attic that creates the ice dam in the first place.

Replacing or upgrading gutters — Ice dams back up behind gutters, but gutters are not the cause — a different gutter style won't prevent water from pooling under lifted shingles and leaking into your walls and ceilings; the water is already on your roof before it reaches the gutter.

Adding more insulation without air-sealing first — This is the most common and frustrating mistake: blown-in insulation laid over existing air leaks does almost nothing, because warm air rising through gaps bypasses the insulation entirely and continues heating the roof deck — the insulation looks better on paper but the ice dams persist.

We had ice dams every single winter for six years and tried heat cables, raking, everything. Last fall I hired an energy auditor — $400 — and he found 14 separate air leak points I never would have found on my own, including around every recessed light in the ceiling below the attic. We sealed everything and added about 10 inches of blown cellulose. This was our worst snowfall winter in years and not one dam formed. Not one. I wish I'd done this the first year.

I did the DIY version — spent one weekend in October with two cans of Great Stuff and some rigid foam board sealing up everything I could reach in the attic. It wasn't perfect and I'm sure I missed some spots, but the dams this year were maybe 20% of what they normally are. I'm going to have someone do a proper blower door test next fall to catch whatever I missed, but even the partial fix made a real difference. The roof raking is down to almost nothing.

Did the air sealing and insulation and it fixed the dams on most of the roof — but we still get ice buildup above a small bump-out section where there's a cathedral ceiling. Apparently that's a separate issue and a much harder fix involving either spray foam inside the rafter bays or reroofing with rigid foam above the deck. The main part of the house is great now, but I want to be honest that complex rooflines don't always respond fully to the attic-floor approach. We're getting quotes on the cathedral ceiling section.
