Ice dams are a symptom of heat loss — not a roofing problem
When your home loses heat through the ceiling and into the attic, that warmth radiates upward and warms the upper portion of your roof deck. Snow sitting on the warm upper roof melts and flows downward toward the eaves — the overhanging edge of your roof that sits above cold outdoor air. There, the water hits a much colder surface and refreezes, building up a ridge of ice. More meltwater flows down, hits the dam, and backs up. That pooled water is what does the real damage: it has nowhere to go but sideways, and eventually under your shingles.
The key thing to understand is that the ice itself is the symptom, not the cause. Your roof shingles, gutters, and flashing are fine (or were fine before the water got in). The actual problem is heat escaping your living space — almost always through insufficient attic insulation, gaps around light fixtures or plumbing penetrations, or inadequate attic ventilation that prevents the roof deck from staying uniformly cold. This is why ice dams tend to be worst directly above the warmest rooms in your house, and why they come back year after year until the underlying heat loss is addressed.
Cold snaps that follow heavy snow are particularly dangerous: the snow acts as a blanket, trapping the heat radiating from your attic and accelerating the melt-refreeze cycle. Homes built before modern insulation codes — generally pre-1980 in most U.S. states — are especially vulnerable, but even newer homes with improperly air-sealed attics can develop significant ice dams.

Ice dams themselves don't fall through your ceiling. The danger is subtler: water migrating under your shingles, sitting on the roof deck for weeks, and slowly rotting the wood, soaking into insulation (which then loses much of its effectiveness), and eventually finding its way into your walls or ceiling cavity. By the time you see a water stain on your drywall, the moisture has often been sitting inside the structure for one or more full winter seasons. Mold can establish in as little as 24–48 hours on wet wood, and a wet, compressed layer of attic insulation can cost $2,000–$8,000 to replace depending on the size of the affected area.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, ice dams and related winter water damage are among the top causes of homeowner insurance claims in cold-climate states, with average claim costs ranging from $4,000 to over $15,000 when interior damage is involved. Many policies cover sudden water intrusion but exclude damage attributed to long-term seepage or inadequate maintenance — which is exactly how adjusters often classify repeated ice-dam leaks.

We had roofers out three winters in a row and they kept saying the shingles needed to be replaced. Finally had an energy auditor do a blower-door test and found out our attic had barely R-11 insulation and about a dozen air leaks around recessed lights. Adding blown-in cellulose and sealing the penetrations last fall — we just went through our worst winter in years and not a single icicle. I wish someone had told us to look at the attic first.

I used the calcium chloride sock trick to melt a channel through the dam last February when water was actively dripping onto my bedroom ceiling — it worked well enough to stop the immediate problem. Filled an old nylon stocking with calcium chloride pellets and laid it perpendicular across the ice dam. Takes a few hours but it opens a drainage path. That said, it's absolutely a temporary fix. The dam reformed within two weeks. The real job is the attic.

Our worst year was when we converted the garage into a bonus room. The ice dams went from minor to severe because the new heated space shared a roof but the insulation above it was never done properly. We didn't connect the two things for two whole winters. Eventually found rot on two rafters and had to have them sistered — not cheap. The ice dam problem was the warning sign we kept ignoring because it seemed cosmetic.
