I had a 12-foot section on the back of the house that had pulled out a good inch and a half. Pressed the fascia — totally solid, no rot. Bought a box of 3.5" hex-head gutter screws from the hardware store for $14, drilled new pilot holes about an inch from the old spike holes, and drove them in until the gutter sat flush. Took maybe 45 minutes including setting up the ladder. That was two months ago and it hasn't moved a millimeter, even through a couple of heavy storms.

I went the hidden hanger bracket route because I was already up there cleaning out the gutters and figured I'd deal with the sagging section at the same time. Snapped the brackets in every 24 inches and screwed them into the fascia. The gutter actually looks better than it has in years — it's sitting level and there's no more gap between the back of the gutter and the fascia. Used about 14 brackets for a 28-foot run, cost me around $20 total.

Started out thinking it was just a fastener problem — pressed the fascia and it felt okay. Drove in the new gutter screws and they held fine in most spots. But one section near the corner, two of the screws just kept spinning — no resistance at all. Pulled the gutter away and sure enough there was a soft spot in the fascia I'd missed, about a foot long. Had to call a contractor to cut out that section and sister in new wood. The contractor charged me $280 for that piece, but I'd already done the rest of the run myself which saved me probably $150. Lesson: check the fascia more carefully than I did, especially near joints and corners where water tends to sit.
