We had drywood termites in the attic — found the frass (the little pellet piles) near a window frame. Inspector confirmed it was limited to a section of the roof framing and we did targeted heat treatment on that area rather than full tenting, which saved us about $900. The treated area has been clean for 18 months now. My advice: get two or three quotes before committing, because the difference between companies on treatment recommendations was significant — one wanted to tent the whole house immediately and the others said targeted treatment was completely appropriate for the spread we had.

I tried the Taurus SC DIY route first because I'd read you could do the same termiticide treatment yourself. I did my best with the trenching around the foundation but honestly I don't think I got the depth and spacing right in the corners. Six months later, new mud tubes appeared near the garage. Eventually called a pro — they retreated the whole perimeter properly and it's been clear since. I don't regret trying, but in hindsight the $400 I "saved" cost me an extra six months of damage and I ended up paying for the professional treatment anyway. For a perimeter application, the technique matters as much as the product.
