Why spraying ants in your kitchen is like bailing a boat without plugging the hole
The ants you see on your counter represent roughly 10–15% of the colony. They are foragers — workers whose job is to find food, lay a pheromone trail back to the nest, and recruit more workers to follow it. The colony itself, including the queen or queens responsible for producing thousands of new ants every day, is located somewhere else: inside a wall void, under a slab, in the soil outside your foundation, or beneath a cabinet kickplate. When you spray foragers with a contact insecticide, you kill those individuals but leave the trail chemistry, the nest, and the reproductive capacity completely intact. Within hours, new foragers follow the existing scent trail and the line reappears.
Making things worse, many common ant species — especially Argentine ants and odorous house ants, two of the most prevalent kitchen invaders in North America — practice a behavior called "budding" when they sense a chemical threat. Rather than retreating, a portion of the colony splits off with a fertile queen and establishes a new satellite nest nearby, effectively multiplying your problem in response to the spray. This is why many homeowners find that after a round of store-bought spray, ants seem to appear in more locations than before.
The only intervention that reliably resolves a kitchen ant problem is one that reaches the colony. That means slow-acting bait the workers carry back and share with the queen and larvae — a process that takes patience but collapses the nest from the inside rather than just inconveniencing the foragers on your counter.

For most common ant species — odorous house ants, pavement ants, little black ants — an untreated kitchen infestation won't cause structural damage, but it will reliably grow. Colonies double in size through the warmer months, and a colony that sends twenty foragers into your kitchen in April may be sending two hundred by August. Food contamination is the practical concern: ants travel freely between drains, decaying matter, and your countertops, transferring bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli to surfaces and open food packaging. The exception that deserves more urgency is carpenter ants: if the large ants you're seeing are nesting inside your home's wood rather than just foraging through it, they can cause significant structural damage over one to three years that goes undetected until repair costs become serious.
A University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources study found that slow-acting bait — particularly borax-based gel formulations — eliminated Argentine ant colonies in treated homes within 1–4 weeks, while homes treated with repellent sprays alone saw no sustained reduction in colony activity. I spent two months spraying every morning and it was like playing whack-a-mole. A neighbor suggested I try the gel bait and just leave it alone — not spray anything else. Within about ten days the trail activity dropped noticeably, and by week three I wasn't seeing them at all. The hardest part was resisting the urge to spray when I saw them still moving around the bait station.

Turned out my issue was carpenter ants coming in through a water-damaged window frame above the sink — not the typical little sugar ants. The bait did nothing because they weren't foraging for sweets, they were nesting in the wood itself. Had to get a pest professional involved who found the damaged framing. Lesson for me: big reddish-black ants that don't respond to bait are probably a different situation than standard kitchen ants.

Mine kept coming back every spring for three years and I couldn't figure out why until I noticed they were entering through a gap where the plumbing pipe comes through the cabinet floor. Sealing that entry point with steel wool and caulk — combined with bait placed right outside where they were coming in — finally broke the cycle. The entry point mattered as much as the bait itself.
