Covering window exteriors with plastic film as your primary air-sealing strategy — Interior window insulation film can help with drafty single-pane windows, but it does nothing for the far larger air leaks around electrical outlets, recessed lights, attic hatches, and pipe penetrations, which is where most heat actually escapes; address those first with caulk and foam before spending time on windows.

I'd always done the basics but kept getting hit with a $400+ heating bill every January. This year I finally caulked around all the recessed lights in the ceiling below my attic, sealed the attic hatch with weatherstripping, and added a programmable thermostat. My December bill was $110 lower than the year before. Wish someone had told me to start in the attic years ago.

I bought my house in August and had no idea it wasn't winterized. A neighbor knocked on my door in October and told me to disconnect my garden hoses — I had no idea that was even a thing. Followed the full checklist here and also had an HVAC tech service the furnace since I didn't know its history. Tech found a cracked heat exchanger that was a safety issue. So glad I did it.

Did everything on the checklist except I put off cleaning the gutters until "after the next rain." We got a hard freeze before I got to it, and I ended up with a small ice dam on the back slope of the roof. No interior damage this time, but I had to pay a guy $200 to safely remove it. The checklist is right — gutters have to come before the freeze, not after. Lesson learned the $200 way.
