Skipped draining the hose bib on the north side of the house two winters ago because I figured it probably had a frost-free valve. It didn't. The pipe inside the wall split and I didn't find out until I turned the hose on in April and water started pouring into my utility room. Repair plus drywall was just over $2,200. Now I drain every exterior faucet in October, no exceptions.

We're in western North Carolina — we don't get the brutal winters that the Midwest does, but we do get occasional hard freezes and ice storms.
