Our master bedroom was consistently 6–8°F warmer than the rest of the house in summer. Had an HVAC tech do a full airflow balance — turns out the supply duct to that room had a crushed flex duct section in the attic cutting airflow by almost half. He replaced that section and sealed two other leaks while he was up there. Cost $340 total and the room has been the same temperature as the hallway ever since. Wish I'd done it three summers ago.

We have a sunroom addition that was freezing every winter and sweltering every summer. Every HVAC person I called said the existing duct system just wasn't designed to reach it adequately and would need major work to fix properly. We went with a single-zone mini-split instead — Mitsubishi unit, $2,800 installed. It heats and cools that room perfectly now, completely independent of the rest of the house. Honestly it's now the most comfortable room we have. Worth every penny.

Installed a Flair smart vent in my home office, which helped a lot in spring and fall when the temperature swings are moderate. But in deep Chicago winter it still runs colder than the rest of the house — the smart vent can only work with what the duct delivers, and I think our duct to that room is genuinely undersized. It's a real improvement and better than nothing, but I'm going to get a proper duct assessment done before next winter. Good interim fix though.
