Not every humid house has the same root cause, so the fixes aren't interchangeable — a dehumidifier won't help if your coil is frozen, and cleaning a filter won't matter if the unit is three sizes too big.
What most people try first — and why it doesn't solve this
Humidity complaints generate a lot of confident-sounding advice online that turns out to be irrelevant to the actual problem. Here are the most common wrong turns.

Turning the thermostat down lower — Setting a colder temperature doesn't give the AC more time to dehumidify; it just makes the short-cycling problem worse because the system overshoots the setpoint even faster and shuts off sooner, leaving the air just as muggy but now also colder.

Running the fan on "ON" instead of "AUTO" — This is widely recommended but is actually counterproductive for humidity: continuous fan operation re-evaporates the condensate sitting in the drain pan back into the airstream, raising humidity. Always run the fan on AUTO when humidity is the problem.

Adding refrigerant ("topping off the Freon") — Low refrigerant is a real problem, but it's not the common cause of high humidity when the AC is running. More importantly, adding refrigerant to a system that doesn't have a confirmed leak wastes money and can damage the compressor. Have a tech check the refrigerant charge properly — don't just add more and hope.

Opening windows at night "to let the house breathe" — In humid climates, nighttime air is often just as moisture-laden as daytime air. Opening windows when outdoor relative humidity is above 60% actively loads your home with moisture that then takes the AC hours to remove the next day.

Our house was sitting at 68% humidity with the AC on constantly. HVAC tech came out, ran a proper load calc, and confirmed our 5-ton unit was way oversized for a 1,800 sq ft house — previous owners had "upgraded" it thinking bigger was better. We installed a 3-ton variable-speed unit and the humidity now sits at 48% without us doing anything else. Night and day difference.

I tried everything — new filter, checked for frozen coil, called a tech who said the refrigerant charge was fine. Eventually a different tech suggested a whole-home dehumidifier tied into the duct system. We had an Aprilaire 1850W installed and it honestly changed how I feel about my house. Florida summers are survivable now. The AC still runs the same but it no longer has to fight a losing battle against constant moisture infiltration from our older windows and doors.

Replaced the filter (genuinely disgusting, hadn't been changed in probably 18 months) and the humidity dropped from 63% to 57%. Better, but still above where I'd like it. Tech found the blower speed was set too high from a previous service visit, which was reducing coil contact time. He dialed it back and now we're at 52–54%. I got a portable dehumidifier for the basement which helps too. Still not perfect but definitely livable. I should probably have the ductwork inspected next.
