Your AC cools the air — but dehumidifying it is a separate job it may be failing at
An air conditioner removes humidity as a side effect of cooling. Warm air from your home passes over a cold evaporator coil; moisture in that air condenses on the coil's surface — just like water forms on a cold glass in summer — and drips into a drain pan. When this process works correctly, your indoor relative humidity stays between roughly 40% and 55%, and the air feels comfortable even at temperatures that might otherwise feel warm. When it fails, the temperature may drop but the air still feels heavy, damp, and stifling.
The most common reason this fails is a mismatch between your AC system and your home's actual load. An oversized air conditioner — one that is too large for the space — cools the air so quickly that it satisfies the thermostat and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull meaningful moisture out. This is called short-cycling, and it is extraordinarily common in homes where the original system was sized by rule of thumb rather than a proper Manual J load calculation. A dirty or iced-over evaporator coil, a low refrigerant charge, or a clogged condensate drain line can produce the same result: the coil never gets cold enough, long enough, to do its dehumidification work.
Duct leaks are a frequently overlooked contributor. If your return ducts run through an unconditioned attic or crawl space, they can draw in hot, humid outdoor air and inject it directly into the airstream before it ever reaches the coil. In older homes, air infiltration through the building envelope — gaps around windows, doors, recessed lights, and penetrations — can also overwhelm the system's ability to keep up, particularly in climates with high outdoor dew points.
High indoor humidity isn't always the same problem wearing the same face
The same symptom — a damp, muggy feeling indoors despite a running AC — can come from several different underlying causes, and the fix differs depending on which one you're actually dealing with.
Chronic indoor humidity does damage that compounds quietly — and quickly
Persistent high indoor humidity isn't just uncomfortable — it actively degrades your home and your health over time. Mold can begin colonizing porous surfaces like drywall, insulation, and wood framing within 24 to 48 hours of sustained moisture exposure, according to EPA guidance. You often can't see it until it's a significant problem. Dust mite populations — a leading trigger for asthma and allergies — also increase sharply when relative humidity rises above 50%. Beyond biology, sustained moisture warps wood flooring and trim, causes paint to peel, and can accelerate corrosion of metal components in your HVAC system itself.
The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60% at all times, and ideally between 30% and 50%. A $12 digital hygrometer will tell you exactly where your home stands. If you're consistently reading above 55% with the AC running, your system is not dehumidifying effectively and the underlying cause should be diagnosed before the next cooling season — mold remediation costs typically run $1,500 to $5,000 for a contained problem, and far more if it spreads to structural materials.

We had a new 4-ton unit installed two years ago and I never understood why the house felt so clammy even when the thermostat hit 72°. My situation turned out to be a dirty evaporator coil — it had a thick layer of dust and grime that was basically insulating it so it couldn't get cold enough to condense moisture properly. I went through almost a year of thinking I needed a dehumidifier added to the system before someone finally checked my return ducts. There was a significant gap where two sections separated in the attic and it was pulling in outside air that's basically soup here in summer. Had it sealed and strapped properly and I haven't touched a standalone dehumidifier since. Don't just add equipment before checking the ductwork — really.
