    My furnace would fire up — I could hear the ignition click and the burners light — but then it would shut off after about four seconds, over and over. Filter was actually fine, changed it last month. So I watched a video on flame sensors, found mine, pulled it out (literally one screw), rubbed it with steel wool for about 30 seconds, put it back. Furnace fired and stayed on. I'm still a little stunned it was that simple. The sensor looked completely normal to me but apparently even slight oxidation is enough to confuse it.

    Replaced the filter — no change. Cleaned the flame sensor — got heat back for about two days, then the same problem returned. Ended up calling a tech who diagnosed a failing inducer motor that was causing intermittent pressure switch faults. I'm glad I tried the DIY steps first because honestly I needed the tech for that one, but at least I wasn't charged for filter and sensor work I could do myself.
