Your furnace has two jobs — and it's only doing one of them
A forced-air furnace has two largely separate functions: the blower fan circulates air through your ductwork, and the burner assembly (or electric heating elements) actually heats that air. When your furnace turns on but produces no warmth at the vents, it usually means the blower is running normally while the heating process has failed or been interrupted. These two systems can fail independently, which is exactly why the furnace sounds and feels "on" while the air coming out stays cold or room temperature.
The most frequent culprits are straightforward: a clogged air filter that caused the furnace to overheat and trip its high-limit safety switch; a failed igniter or dirty flame sensor that prevents the burners from ever lighting; a tripped circuit breaker on the heating circuit (many furnaces share a breaker with the blower but have a separate fuse for the heating elements); or a thermostat misconfigured so the fan runs continuously on "ON" rather than "AUTO." In gas furnaces, a faulty gas valve or a pilot light that won't stay lit produces exactly the same symptom — fan runs, no heat.
Less commonly, a cracked heat exchanger will cause the furnace's safety controls to shut down combustion while leaving the blower active — a situation that requires urgent professional attention because a cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into your living space. This is the outlier, not the rule, but it's worth knowing it's on the list.
A furnace with no heat isn't always the same problem

What happens if you leave it alone — and what actually warrants urgency
Most causes of this problem — a dirty filter, a failed igniter, a thermostat setting — will not fix themselves and will gradually stress other components. A furnace running continuously without producing heat is working harder than it should, which accelerates wear on the blower motor and control board. If the root cause is a clogged filter causing repeated overheating cycles, you're shortening the life of the heat exchanger every time the limit switch trips. That said, this is not an emergency in most cases — it's a problem with a clear path to resolution that gets more expensive the longer it's deferred.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a clogged air filter is the single most common cause of furnace failure and heating inefficiency — and replacing a $10–$25 filter is the first thing any HVAC technician will check. If your filter hasn't been changed in more than 90 days and your furnace is producing no heat, change the filter first, then reset your furnace by switching it off at the thermostat for 30 seconds before turning it back on. This alone resolves the problem in a meaningful percentage of cases.

Our furnace kept cycling — it would run for about four minutes, blow lukewarm air, then shut off. This went on for two days. Turned out to be the flame sensor, which is a small rod that sits in the burner flame and tells the furnace the burners are actually lit. Ours was coated in oxidation. A tech cleaned it with fine steel wool in about 10 minutes and charged us $85 for the service call. Apparently it's one of the most common repairs on older furnaces. I wish I'd known — it's a doable DIY if you're comfortable turning off the gas and finding the part.

Ours turned out to be a failed inducer motor — the part that vents combustion gases before the burners light. The furnace was going through its startup sequence, the blower was running, but the inducer never came on so the pressure switch never closed and the burners never fired. Cost us $340 in parts and labor. Not the answer I was hoping for, but the tech walked me through exactly what failed and why, and showed me the error code on the control board that pointed straight to it. At least there was a clear diagnosis rather than guessing.
