When the house won't cool, the instinct is to override the system — turn it down lower, run it harder, or add refrigerant yourself. Every one of those instincts is wrong, and here's the specific reason why.

Our condenser was the problem — we have two big Texas sage bushes that had completely grown into the unit on two sides. Cut them back, hosed the fins off from inside out, and gave it 45 minutes before turning the system back on. Dropped three degrees in the first hour. The AC wasn't broken at all, it was just suffocating. Worth checking before you assume refrigerant.

Changed the filter and cleaned the condenser — both were genuinely dirty and both needed doing. The house cooled a bit better but still wouldn't get below 78°F on days over 95°F outside. Called a tech and it turned out we had a slow refrigerant leak; we'd lost about 30% of our charge. Recharge plus leak repair was $480. In hindsight the DIY steps were still worth doing — the tech said the dirty condenser alone was probably costing us 15–20% of our cooling capacity on top of the refrigerant issue.
