Why your AC can run for hours and still leave you sweating
Your air conditioner cools your home through a refrigerant cycle: warm indoor air passes over a cold evaporator coil, the refrigerant inside the coil absorbs the heat, carries it outside, and dumps it through the condenser. When any part of that loop breaks down — airflow into the coil, the refrigerant level, the coil's ability to make contact with air, or the outdoor unit's ability to shed heat — the system keeps running but stops doing useful work. The motor is on. The fans are spinning. Cold air just isn't arriving in meaningful quantity.
The four most common failure points are: a clogged air filter starving the coil of airflow; low refrigerant from a slow leak (refrigerant doesn't evaporate naturally — if it's low, you have a leak); a frozen evaporator coil, which is often caused by the first two problems and creates a self-reinforcing blockage; and a dirty or obstructed outdoor condenser unit that can't release heat. Each of these leaves the compressor working hard while delivering little to no cooling. A fifth cause — an undersized or aging system struggling on an extreme weather day — is worth keeping in mind, especially if the problem only appears during heat waves.
Thermostat and electrical issues can also mimic this symptom. If your thermostat is reading temperatures incorrectly, or if a relay is causing the fan to run while the compressor is off, the system sounds operational but the cooling cycle isn't completing. This is less common than the mechanical causes above, but it's worth checking your thermostat settings and ensuring it's set to "cool," not "fan only," before anything else.

Mine was low refrigerant. The tech found a small leak at a fitting in the evaporator coil — said it had probably been losing refrigerant slowly for over a year. The system was working fine in mild weather but couldn't keep up once temps hit 108°F. He sealed the leak and recharged it and the difference was immediate. Wish I'd caught it sooner — the compressor was starting to show stress from running so hard.

My outdoor condenser unit was completely choked with cottonwood fluff and grass clippings — I had no idea how bad it was until I actually looked at it. Hosed it down gently and cleared the fins, and cooling capacity improved noticeably. Still wasn't perfect, so I had a tech come out and he found the refrigerant was slightly low too. Both problems together were killing efficiency. Now it keeps the house at 72° even on the worst days.
