What people try first that makes the problem worse
These approaches are popular because they seem logical or are heavily marketed — but every one of them leads back to the same cracked grout within weeks or months.

Grouting over existing cracked grout — The new grout has nothing stable to bond to, so it cracks again along the same lines — usually within a few weeks of the first wet exposure. The only exception is if the original grout is perfectly sound and you're applying a specialty epoxy coating, which is a different product entirely.

Adding extra water to make the grout easier to spread — This is the single most common DIY mistake: a wetter mix is easier to work with but dramatically weakens the cured grout, making it porous, soft, and prone to cracking. Follow the powder-to-water ratio on the package exactly, even if the mix feels stiff.

My shower corners had cracked and been regrouted so many times they were a mess. I scraped them all out and used a white silicone caulk instead of grout — matched pretty closely. That was four months ago and they still look perfect. I had no idea you weren't supposed to use grout in corners. Nobody ever told me that and it's apparently the whole reason they kept failing.

I regrouted the bathroom floor and it looked great for about six weeks, then two spots started cracking again in almost the same places. Called a tile guy and he immediately spotted the problem — the plywood subfloor was flexing, not a lot but enough. He said no grout would survive that without an uncoupling membrane underneath. So the regrouting did work, just not permanently because the real issue was deeper. Getting a proper fix quoted now.
