Why tile grout cracks — and it's usually not the grout's fault
Grout is a rigid, cement-based filler. It bonds tiles together and keeps moisture and debris out of the joints — but it has almost no give. When the structure beneath your tiles moves even slightly, whether from a flexing subfloor, normal house settling, or the natural expansion and contraction that comes with temperature changes, the grout absorbs that stress. Over time, it cracks, and eventually crumbles at the edges. The tile itself is often fine; it's the joint filler doing the hard work of carrying movement it was never designed to handle alone.
Installation choices matter enormously here. Grout lines that are too narrow, substrate that wasn't adequately cured or reinforced, or grout mixed with too much water will all fail earlier than they should. In wet areas like showers, using the wrong type of grout — or skipping sealant entirely — accelerates deterioration significantly. And in corners and changes-of-plane (where the floor meets the wall, for example), grout should actually never be used at all; those joints require flexible caulk, which most installers know but many DIYers miss.
Age also plays a role. Even properly installed, unsanded grout in narrow joints typically has a lifespan of five to ten years before it needs attention. Epoxy grout lasts considerably longer, but it's harder to work with and less common in residential installations. If your grout is simply old, the crumbling you're seeing is normal wear — and a straightforward repair is well within reach.

The way your grout is failing can tell you a lot about the underlying cause — and which fix will actually hold.
What happens if you leave cracked grout alone
In a dry area — a living room or hallway floor — cracked grout is mostly a cosmetic issue in the short term. Debris will work its way into the gaps and gradually make the cracks wider, but you have time to address it without panic. In wet areas, the calculus changes entirely. Grout in showers, around tubs, and on kitchen backsplashes is the only thing standing between water and your wall cavity or subfloor. Once water finds those cracks, it doesn't stop — it migrates behind the tile, soaks into drywall or cement board, and creates conditions ideal for mold growth and structural rot. By the time you notice water damage or loose tiles, the repair scope has typically grown well beyond a simple regrout job.

I had crumbling grout in my master bath shower for probably two years before I did anything about it. When I finally pulled the loose bits out, the drywall behind one section was soft and discoloured — definitely some moisture damage. I ended up having to replace a section of cement board before I could regrout. Wish I'd dealt with it sooner. The actual regrout wasn't that hard once the damaged substrate was sorted.

My kitchen floor grout was cracking in a line across the middle of the room — perfectly straight, which turned out to be right over a joist. The subfloor was flexing just a tiny bit every time someone walked across it, and that flex kept snapping the grout. I had to stiffen the subfloor from below before regrout would actually hold. Just regrout without fixing that and it'll crack again within a year — found that out the hard way the first time.

Corner joints where my tub meets the tile wall kept cracking no matter what I did. Replaced with grout twice — same result every time within a few months. Turned out the answer was just caulk. Those corners need to be caulk, not grout, because the tub flexes when you get in and out of it. Once I switched to a siliconized caulk matched to the grout colour, it's been holding fine for eight months now.
