I had a loud squeak right at the top of the staircase landing — embarrassing every time a guest walked up. Tried the powdered graphite trick from a bottle I already had for the door locks. Worked it into the seam between two boards with an old credit card, walked back and forth a dozen times, and it was completely silent. Took maybe eight minutes total. I genuinely couldn't believe it was that simple after living with the noise for two years.

Our hallway had three squeaky spots and I was dreading a big repair. My husband went into the basement while I walked the floor slowly — he could see the subfloor moving up and down at two of the spots. We shimmed those two from below with cedar shims and a little Liquid Nails, and used graphite on the third one which was clearly a surface friction issue. All three are silent now and it cost us about $12 in materials.

The graphite approach quieted about 70% of the squeak in my living room but there's still a faint creak right in the middle of the room. I don't have basement access — the house is on a slab — so shimming isn't an option for me. I ended up calling a flooring contractor who said the adhesive on part of my glue-down floor has just let go and I'd need a small section refastened properly. Getting that done next month. The graphite was absolutely worth trying first though, and I'd do it again.
