What most people try first — and why it fails
The products that feel obvious when you're staring at a dark stain on your floor are almost universally the wrong ones for the job. Here's what to skip.

Household bleach (chlorine / sodium hypochlorite) — This is not the same as wood bleach. Chlorine bleach aggressively attacks wood fibers, causes uneven lightening that spreads beyond the stain, raises the grain, and can make the repair far more visible than the original stain — all without reliably removing the tannin-iron discoloration that caused the dark mark in the first place.

Mopping or soaking with floor cleaner — Any floor cleaner applied in volume to a stained area is introducing more moisture to wood that has likely already been damaged by moisture — it compounds the problem rather than solving it, and repeated application can cause the surrounding boards to swell, cup, or warp.

Refinishing over the stain without treating the wood — Applying a new coat of polyurethane or floor finish over a dark stain does not seal it away or hide it — the discoloration is in the wood itself, not in the finish, and will show through any number of clear coats. The finish must come off, the stain must be treated at the wood level, and then the finish goes back on.

Skipping the neutralization step after oxalic acid — This is the most common DIY mistake with wood bleach. Oxalic acid left in the wood fibers continues to work, can interfere with the adhesion of new finish, and may cause the repaired area to look chalky or discolored over time. We had a massive black stain under where the dog's water bowl had been sitting for two years — absolutely nothing touched it until I tried oxalic acid. I was nervous about sanding because the floors are original 1940s oak and I didn't want to thin them out, but I only had to go down very lightly. After two treatments with the wood bleach the stain was maybe 80% gone, and once I re-stained and put two coats of poly back on you genuinely cannot tell. It took a full weekend but it was 100% worth it versus replacing the boards.

The hydrogen peroxide tip saved me. I had a light yellowish stain from a plant pot — caught it within a few days of it happening. I soaked a rag in regular 3% peroxide from the drugstore, laid it over the spot, and left it overnight under a piece of plastic wrap so it wouldn't dry out. In the morning the stain had lifted almost completely. I let the floor dry for a full day before putting the pot back. No sanding, no refinishing. I'll take that win.

I tried the oxalic acid on an old cat urine stain that had been there since before we bought the house — so probably 5+ years old. The stain went from near-black to a medium brown, which is honestly a dramatic improvement, but it didn't go away completely. I did two rounds of treatment and called it good enough, then re-stained with a slightly darker walnut color that blends in well. If I had to do it again I'd probably just call a pro given how deep that stain had set, but as a partial DIY fix it's acceptable. Just go in with realistic expectations on really old stains.
