The right approach depends entirely on what's actually causing the trip, and you can find out in about ten minutes with no tools at all before deciding whether to spend any money.

Dry out the outlet and let moisture clear

Bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor outlets are exposed to steam, splashing, and condensation. If the GFCI trips immediately even with nothing plugged in, aim a fan at the outlet for 30–60 minutes (with the breaker off), then restore power and try resetting. Moisture intrusion is the most common cause of nuisance tripping in damp locations.

Trade-off: if moisture has been present long enough to corrode internal contacts, drying alone won't fix it — the device will need replacement.

DIY Fix
Replace the GFCI outlet itself

GFCI devices have a typical service life of 10–15 years. If the outlet trips immediately with nothing plugged in and no moisture is present, the device has almost certainly failed internally. Turn off the circuit breaker, swap in a matching replacement (15A or 20A to match the circuit), and restore power. A new outlet costs $15–$35 at any hardware store.

  • Pressing Reset repeatedly without unplugging anything — If there's an active ground fault on the circuit, pressing Reset over and over will just keep tripping the device; you haven't removed the condition that's causing the trip, so it will never hold. Unplug everything first — every time, without exception.
  • Replacing the GFCI before checking connected appliances — A new device will trip for exactly the same reason the old one did if a faulty appliance is still plugged into a downstream outlet; you've spent $25 and 45 minutes to end up in the same place. The appliance isolation test takes two minutes and should always come first.
  • Replacing the GFCI with a standard outlet to "stop it tripping" — This is genuinely dangerous and in most jurisdictions illegal under the NEC. GFCI protection in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor locations exists because those environments are statistically lethal without it. A GFCI tripping is working correctly — removing the protection doesn't fix the fault, it just removes your warning system.
  • Assuming the circuit breaker is the problem — A GFCI outlet and a circuit breaker are separate protection devices that trip for different reasons. A GFCI trips at 5 milliamps of ground leakage; a breaker trips at overload or short-circuit levels measured in amps — orders of magnitude more current. If your GFCI won't reset, check the outlet first; the breaker is almost never the cause unless the outlet has no power at all (in which case, yes, check the panel).

    My kitchen GFCI kept tripping after I ran the dishwasher — took a minute to figure out the dishwasher outlet was downstream of the GFCI.
