Most homeowners instinctively try to fix what they can see (the leaning panels) rather than what's actually broken (the post and its footing). These are the three approaches we see most often that don't work — each of them feels logical but none of them addresses the real cause.

  • Attaching a diagonal brace or tension wire to the fence panels — Bracing from rail to rail or running wire across the fence face might straighten the appearance temporarily, but the post is still moving — the brace just transfers the lean stress into the panels and pickets, which will split, pull away from the rails, or bow within a season or two.
  • Packing dirt or gravel tightly around the base of the post — This is a very common first instinct and it feels like it should work — but loose fill dirt and gravel compact further with rain and frost, and they provide a fraction of the lateral resistance that concrete does; the post will work loose again, usually within one wet season.
  • Sistering a new post onto a rotted one — If you bolt new wood to wood that has active rot, you introduce moisture and fungal spores to the new post through the contact surface — the rot migrates, and your new post will begin to fail faster than it otherwise would have; always remove rotted posts completely before sistering or replacing.

    I had two posts leaning after a wet winter — both were still solid wood, just loose in the ground with no original concrete. I rented a 6-inch auger from Home Depot for $65, dug alongside each post about 30 inches down, packed in two bags of Quikrete Fast-Setting per post, and watered it in. Both posts have been rock solid through two rainstorms since. The whole job took me a Saturday morning. Wish I'd done it three years ago when it first started leaning.

    Our fence had been leaning noticeably for two summers. When I finally grabbed the corner post and pushed it, I could feel it moving — and when I dug down about 8 inches I found the wood was completely black and spongy at the soil line. We had to do a full replacement on that post and the one next to it. Bought two 4×4×8 pressure-treated posts rated for ground contact from the lumber yard — not the cheaper ones at the big box store, which I was warned are sometimes UC3B, not UC4B — set them 28 inches deep with concrete, and the fence looks brand new. The neighbor actually commented on it.

    I tried the repair spike approach — bought a galvanized one for about $22, hammered it in alongside the post, bolted it on. It straightened the fence and it looked great. But about four months later after a very wet fall the post started drifting again. Turns out we have quite loose soil in that part of the yard. I ended up having to do it properly with concrete anyway, which I should have just done first. The spike probably works fine in firm soil — just not in soft or loamy ground.
