Why wooden fence posts lean — and it's almost always the same culprit
A wooden fence leans because at least one post has lost its ability to stay rigid in the ground. The fence panels and rails themselves are rarely the problem — they're doing what they're supposed to do, which is transferring load to the posts. When a post can no longer resist that load, the whole section tilts. The root cause is almost always wood decay at or just below the soil line, where moisture is highest and air circulation is lowest. Once the fibers soften enough, the post can't fight gravity any longer.
Several factors accelerate this. Posts set in solid concrete collars that cup water against the wood will rot faster than posts set in gravel-drained footings, because the water has nowhere to go. Pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact (UC4B or higher) lasts significantly longer than standard lumber, but even treated wood eventually succumbs if it was installed improperly or if the treatment grade was too light for your soil conditions. Sprinkler systems that routinely wet the base of fence posts are a particularly common accelerant — the wood never fully dries out between watering cycles.
The lean itself can also be caused by frost heave in cold climates, where posts set too shallow get pushed upward by expanding frozen ground and come to rest at an angle when the ground thaws. This is a footing depth problem rather than a rot problem, and it requires a different fix. Knowing which one you're dealing with changes everything about your repair approach.

The lean is the symptom — but what's driving it varies enough that the right fix depends on matching your situation to the correct cause.
What happens if you leave a leaning fence alone
A slightly leaning fence won't suddenly collapse overnight in most cases — but it will get worse, not better, on its own. Once a post has started to lean, the load it was carrying gets transferred to the adjacent posts. Those posts then take on more stress than they were designed for, and they begin to fail faster. What starts as one bad post can work its way down an entire fence run within a season or two. If you have pets or children relying on the fence for containment, a leaning panel is also a genuine safety concern — a fence that's already at 15 degrees doesn't need much of a push to come down.
Replacing a single rotted post early typically costs $150–$400 with a contractor, or $20–$60 in materials if you do it yourself. Waiting until multiple posts fail — or until a panel falls and damages a vehicle, a neighbor's property, or a person — can push total costs into the thousands and may introduce a liability issue. The repair window is almost always cheapest when you catch it at one post.

I had two posts leaning at the back of our yard — the wood at the base was basically mush. I tried those metal repair spurs you hammer in next to the old post and pack with fast-setting concrete. Honestly, it worked better than I expected. It's been two months and the fence is plumb. Total cost was maybe $45 in hardware.

Ours was a frost heave situation — every spring the corner post would shift a bit more. After two years of propping it back, a contractor told us the footing was only 18 inches deep and needed to be below the frost line (42 inches here). We had three posts properly reset and haven't had a problem since. Lesson learned about cutting corners on depth at install.

Tried to DIY the post reset on my own and underestimated how heavy a fence section is when you're trying to hold it plumb and pour concrete at the same time. Ended up calling a neighbor to help and it went fine, but don't try to do a full post reset solo. The repair spur approach is much more manageable for one person.
