Why concrete cracks — and what the crack is actually telling you
Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension. From the moment a slab is poured, it begins shrinking as the water in the mix evaporates during curing — and that shrinkage creates internal stress. When the stress exceeds the concrete's tensile strength, it relieves itself by cracking. This is not a flaw; it's physics. A well-installed patio will have control joints precisely because the installer knew cracks were coming and gave the concrete a predetermined place to form them. When you see a crack in a joint line, that's the system working as intended.
What makes concrete crack beyond normal shrinkage is almost always what's happening beneath the slab or at its surface. Freeze-thaw cycles are a major culprit in colder climates: water seeps into tiny pores or existing micro-cracks, freezes, expands by roughly 9%, and widens the crack with each cycle. Soil settlement — the gradual compaction or erosion of the sub-base — removes support from beneath the slab, causing it to flex under load until it fractures. Tree roots can lift and split a slab from below. And overloading (parking a vehicle, placing a very heavy planter) can stress a slab that wasn't designed for that weight.
The key diagnostic question is not "is there a crack?" but rather: how wide is it, is one side higher than the other, and is it growing? A thin, flat, stable crack is a cosmetic issue. A wide, uneven, or actively widening crack is a structural signal that deserves a real response.
Not all concrete cracks are the same problem
The appearance and pattern of a crack usually points directly to its cause — which determines how urgent and expensive the fix is.
What happens when you leave concrete cracks alone
For hairline and stable cosmetic cracks, the honest answer is: not much, as long as you seal them periodically to keep water out. Many homeowners live with small surface cracks for years without any worsening. The risk with ignoring even minor cracks is that water gets in, freeze-thaw cycles slowly widen them, and what was a $30 sealant job becomes a $300 crack repair — or eventually a full slab replacement. Sealing is cheap insurance.
Displaced or sinking cracks are a different matter. When one side of a crack is higher than the other, you have an uneven surface that poses a genuine trip hazard. More importantly, it means the sub-base has failed in some way — and the underlying cause (soil erosion, a broken underground pipe, root intrusion) will keep progressing unless addressed. A slab that has already cracked and shifted is absorbing stress unevenly, which accelerates further cracking. The longer you wait, the larger the repair footprint typically becomes.
According to the Portland Cement Association, a slab crack wider than 1/4 inch (about the thickness of a nickel) or showing vertical displacement of 1/4 inch or more should be professionally evaluated — at that point, the sub-base almost certainly needs attention, not just the surface crack. Basic slab lifting (mudjacking or polyurethane foam injection) typically runs $500–$1,500 for a residential patio; full removal and replacement averages $8–$18 per square foot depending on region and complexity.

I had a crack running diagonally across the far corner of my patio that I ignored for two winters. By spring it had opened up to maybe a quarter inch and one side had risen noticeably — I caught my foot on it. Had a concrete contractor come out and he said the base had washed out in that corner, probably from a gutter downspout draining too close. They lifted the slab, recompacted the base, and reset it. Total was $680. I wish I'd dealt with it the first year.

Our patio had a bunch of those spider-web surface cracks — kind of alarming-looking when the sun hits them at an angle. A mason friend told me it was crazing, probably from the surface drying too fast when it was originally poured. He said it's purely cosmetic on an otherwise solid slab. I cleaned it, applied a penetrating concrete sealer, and honestly it looks much better and I stopped worrying about it.

Had a structural engineer look at mine after I noticed one crack was getting wider each spring. Turned out the oak tree at the edge of the patio had roots growing under the slab. He said I had two options: remove the tree and repair the concrete, or cut a relief groove and accept the slab would slowly shift. I went with removing a large branch that redirected root growth and had the crack routed and filled with a flexible polyurethane sealant. It's held for two seasons so far. Not a permanent fix but buying time while the tree adjusts.
