I was completely sure it was the heating element because the dryer felt warm but clothes weren't drying. Read this page, washed the lint screen with dish soap like it suggested — I could not believe how much water beaded up on it before, like it was basically waterproof. After washing it, the screen let light through again. Next load dried perfectly in one cycle. I'd been living with this for eight months.

Cleaned the vent and washed the lint screen — got some improvement but still needed an extra cycle for heavy items like jeans and towels. Wiped the moisture sensor bars and that helped a bit more. Eventually a technician found one of the two heating coils had partially failed, so I was only getting maybe 70% of the heat I should have been. A $28 part later and it's genuinely good as new. Worth doing all the free stuff first though — it did help and it needed doing regardless.
