Why your dryer keeps running but the clothes stay damp
A dryer dries clothes through a simple process: it pulls in air, heats it, tumbles it through the drum to absorb moisture from the fabric, and then exhausts that warm, humid air outside through a vent duct. When any part of that airflow cycle breaks down — and it usually does over time — the dryer can't move moisture out fast enough. The drum keeps spinning, the timer keeps running, but the clothes come out damp because the wet air has nowhere to go. Running a second or third cycle isn't drying so much as it's buying time for moisture to gradually escape on its own.
The single most common culprit is a restricted exhaust vent. Lint that slips past the lint trap accumulates inside the duct over months and years, gradually narrowing the passage until airflow is significantly reduced. But a blocked vent isn't the only possibility. A worn-out heating element may be producing less heat than required. The moisture sensor strips inside the drum — two small metal bars that tell the dryer when clothes are dry — can get coated in fabric-softener residue and give false "dry" readings, causing the dryer to stop before the job is done. And simply overloading the drum prevents hot air from circulating freely through the clothes.
In gas dryers specifically, a partially failed igniter or a faulty gas valve coil can produce intermittent heat — the dryer feels warm but never gets hot enough to drive moisture out efficiently. Electric dryers often have two heating coils, and if one burns out the dryer still runs but at roughly half its intended heat output, which shows up exactly as described: clothes are warm but still damp after a full cycle.

For most households, the immediate cost is just wasted time and higher electricity or gas bills — running two cycles instead of one essentially doubles the energy cost of every load. But the more serious concern is fire risk. When lint builds up in a dryer vent and the dryer runs longer and hotter than normal trying to compensate, you get exactly the conditions that cause dryer fires: accumulated fuel (lint) and excess heat in an enclosed space. This isn't a remote possibility — it's the most common scenario behind dryer fires in U.S. homes. The problem doesn't usually announce itself with obvious warning signs before it becomes dangerous.
The U.S. Fire Administration estimates that dryers cause approximately 2,900 home structure fires each year, resulting in around 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss annually. My dryer had been taking forever for about six months — I just assumed it was getting old. Finally got a dryer vent cleaning kit from the hardware store and pulled out an alarming amount of lint from the duct. One cycle now does what three used to. I genuinely didn't realize how serious the buildup was.

Turned out to be a failed heating element — one of the two coils in my electric dryer had burned out. Dryer was still producing some heat so I assumed it was fine, but it was running at about half capacity. Replaced the element myself for around $30 and it's back to normal. Worth checking before assuming the whole unit needs to go.

My dryer was stopping early and leaving things damp — I thought it was the thermostat. Wiped down the moisture sensor bars inside the drum with a bit of rubbing alcohol (they had a visible white coating from dryer sheets) and the auto-dry cycle started working properly again. Took five minutes. The sensor was just reading "dry" when things weren't.
