Why your immune system keeps raising the stakes — season after season
Allergies work through a process called sensitization. The first time your immune system encounters a substance like tree pollen or grass, it doesn't usually react — it's simply taking notes. It files that substance as a potential threat and produces antibodies (specifically IgE antibodies) tuned to recognize it. Subsequent exposures are when the reaction kicks in: those IgE antibodies trigger mast cells to release histamine, causing the sneezing, itching, and congestion you know well. The more seasons you're exposed, the more sensitized your immune system becomes — meaning it now fires more aggressively for less provocation. That's why a pollen count that felt manageable five years ago now lays you flat.
There's a second, environmental driver that is harder to escape: climate change is genuinely extending and intensifying pollen seasons. Higher atmospheric CO2 acts as a fertilizer for many allergy-triggering plants, causing them to produce more pollen per plant. Warmer winters push the start of pollen season earlier — in some parts of North America, the season now begins two to four weeks sooner than it did in the 1990s. A landmark 2022 study in Nature Communications, analyzing data from 60 North American stations, found pollen seasons have lengthened by an average of 20 days and total pollen concentrations have increased by roughly 21 percent since 1990. Both forces — your increasingly reactive immune system and longer, heavier pollen seasons — compound each other.
A third factor worth knowing: you can develop new allergies as an adult even if you had none as a child, and you can add new allergen sensitivities on top of existing ones. Moving to a new region exposes you to plant species your immune system has never encountered. Stress, illness, hormonal changes, and even certain medications can lower your immune threshold, making reactions that were previously subclinical suddenly symptomatic. Allergy isn't a fixed condition — it's a moving target.

Left unaddressed, progressively worsening allergies don't tend to stabilize. The allergic march — a well-documented progression in which untreated allergic rhinitis (hay fever) advances into asthma in a significant proportion of sufferers — is one of the most consistent findings in allergy medicine. Studies estimate that somewhere between 20 and 40 percent of people with uncontrolled allergic rhinitis will develop asthma over time. Beyond the respiratory risk, chronic allergy inflammation is linked to poor sleep, reduced cognitive performance, and increased susceptibility to sinus infections. This doesn't mean panic is warranted — but it does mean that treating worsening allergies as a minor inconvenience to push through is not the low-stakes choice it might feel like.
A 2020 review in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots or sublingual drops) is the only current treatment that can actually reduce underlying sensitization — not just mask symptoms — and that starting it earlier in the escalation curve produces better long-term outcomes than waiting until symptoms become severe. Symptom-management medications do nothing to slow the progression.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and never had allergies. Moved to North Carolina eleven years ago and by year three I was completely useless every April. Every year since it's gotten longer — this past spring started in late February. My allergist told me oak pollen counts here are genuinely among the highest in the country and that my immune system essentially went into overdrive because it had no prior exposure. Starting immunotherapy this fall.

What really threw me was developing oral allergy syndrome in my late 30s — suddenly raw apples and raw carrots made my throat itch. My allergist explained it's cross-reactivity with birch pollen, which I've had since childhood but which has gotten worse. The apple thing started the same year my spring symptoms got noticeably worse. I didn't connect the two until she pointed it out. Apparently it's very common once your birch sensitization reaches a certain threshold.

I want to push back slightly on the framing that everyone just gets worse — I did allergy shots for three years in my early 40s and I am genuinely better now than I was a decade ago. Cedar season in Austin used to ruin January and February for me. Last winter I got through it with basically just a daily cetirizine. It took patience and the first year of shots was rough, but I feel like I actually fixed something rather than just managing it forever.
