  • Doing more high-intensity exercise to "burn off" stress — This is counterproductive. Vigorous exercise is itself a cortisol stimulus, and if your HPA axis is already dysregulated, adding more HIIT sessions to manage stress can sustain or worsen the elevation; the evidence consistently points toward moderate-intensity exercise as the therapeutic sweet spot for cortisol reduction.
  • Relying on a single morning blood cortisol test to guide decisions — Serum cortisol varies enormously across the day (it is highest at waking and lowest at midnight), so a single morning draw tells you almost nothing useful about whether your cortisol is chronically elevated; decisions about treatment should be based on 24-hour urinary free cortisol and/or late-night salivary cortisol, which are far more clinically meaningful.
  • Extreme caloric restriction or elimination diets as a cortisol fix — Severe caloric restriction and prolonged fasting are well-documented cortisol stimulants — your body interprets starvation as a physiological stressor. Some elimination diets in the wellness space are marketed as "anti-inflammatory" cortisol solutions but the stress of restrictive eating can raise, not lower, cortisol, particularly in people who are already metabolically stressed.

My new GP actually ordered the 24-hour urine test rather than the standard blood draw, and my cortisol was significantly elevated. She referred me to an endocrinologist who ruled out Cushing's but put me through a structured MBSR program and had me cut caffeine after noon. Three months in, symptoms are substantially better and the cortisol numbers have dropped. The supplements were doing nothing.

    Sleep and breathing exercises helped my anxiety noticeably within about two weeks, and I do feel less wired at night. But my follow-up cortisol test was still elevated — not as high, but not normal. My endocrinologist says this is where it gets more complicated: I have some features that warrant more imaging. So the lifestyle stuff was genuinely useful and I don't regret doing it, but for me it wasn't the whole answer. If your levels are still up after real lifestyle effort, please don't assume more supplements will fix it — get the proper workup.
