Hormones are chemical messengers produced by glands throughout your body — the thyroid, adrenal glands, ovaries, testes, pancreas, pituitary, and others. They travel through the bloodstream and instruct virtually every organ and tissue what to do: how fast to burn energy, when to sleep, how to regulate mood, whether to store fat or burn it, and much more. When even one of these messengers is too high or too low — even slightly — the downstream effects ripple across multiple systems at once. That's why a hormone imbalance rarely shows up as just one symptom. It shows up as five.
The most commonly disrupted hormones include thyroid hormones (which govern metabolism and energy), cortisol (the stress and arousal hormone produced by the adrenal glands), estrogen and progesterone (which regulate reproductive cycles, mood, and bone density in women), testosterone (which affects muscle, libido, and energy in both sexes), and insulin (which controls blood sugar). A 2021 review published in Frontiers in Endocrinology found that subclinical thyroid dysfunction — where TSH is abnormal but the patient has no dramatic symptoms — is present in an estimated 10–15% of adults and is significantly associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and mood disorders if left untreated. Most of these individuals had no idea their thyroid was underperforming. My hormone story turned out to be cortisol-driven, not thyroid or estrogen like I assumed.
