Dental chews work primarily through mechanical abrasion — the act of chewing wears away soft plaque from the tooth surface, much like a toothbrush would. The catch is that a chew only contacts the teeth your pet actually chews with, for as long as the chew lasts, and only on surfaces the chew physically touches. Many dogs gulp chews rather than chew them, which eliminates most of the benefit entirely. In theory this sounds useful; in practice, dilution in a full water bowl, reduced contact time, and palatability problems mean real-world results are frequently underwhelming.

The VOHC is an independent body that reviews clinical trial data submitted by manufacturers and awards its seal only to products showing at least a 10% statistically significant reduction in plaque or tartar. That 10% threshold is modest — brushing is consistently more effective — but it at least represents verified, measurable benefit. The majority of dental chews and water additives on store shelves have never submitted data to the VOHC, and some that carry attractive "dental" branding have no published efficacy trials at all.
