Restricting access to water to see if it makes the drinking "normal" again — This is one of the most dangerous mistakes an owner can make. Cats with kidney disease or diabetes are drinking more because their bodies urgently need fluids to compensate for what they're losing. Limiting water access in these cats can accelerate organ damage and push a manageable condition into an acute crisis within hours.

Switching to wet food and waiting to see if the thirst reduces — Increasing moisture in your cat's diet is genuinely good advice as a long-term habit, and it does slightly reduce how much a cat drinks from a bowl. But it will not resolve or mask the underlying condition causing polydipsia — it will simply make the symptom slightly less visible while the disease continues to progress undiagnosed.

Our cat Cleo was diagnosed with diabetes after I noticed she was drinking constantly and using the litter box way more than usual. I was honestly terrified of giving injections but it turned out to be much easier than I expected — she barely flinches. The vet also told me that cats with diabetes can sometimes go into remission on a low-carb diet, and after four months of careful management Cleo's numbers are so good we've been able to reduce her insulin dose significantly. My 14-year-old was diagnosed with early-stage CKD, which I'd suspected after reading about it. The vet put her on a prescription renal diet and we added a water fountain to encourage more drinking (which sounds counterintuitive but it's actually what you want with kidney disease — you want them hydrated). Her kidney values haven't worsened in three months of monitoring, which the vet says is a good result. She's not cured — CKD doesn't work that way — but it's manageable. My only frustration is I waited about three weeks after I first noticed the change before booking the appointment, and I regret that.
