Why your sliding glass door has become a wrestling match
Sliding glass doors operate on a deceptively simple mechanical system: a set of rollers — usually two per panel — ride along a metal or aluminum track at the bottom of the door frame. When everything is clean, correctly aligned, and the rollers are in good shape, the door moves with almost no effort. When any part of that system degrades, the friction increases dramatically. The three main culprits are worn or flattened rollers that no longer roll freely, a track clogged with dirt, pet hair, and debris that creates a physical dam, and a door that has dropped slightly out of its frame due to settling, leaving the panel sitting too low in the track.
Several things accelerate the problem. High-traffic doors wear their rollers faster. Homes near the coast deal with salt-air corrosion that eats into roller bearings and track surfaces. Homes in dusty climates accumulate track debris quickly. And if someone — at any point — has used an oil-based lubricant like WD-40 on the track, that oil has been quietly collecting grit and turning into a fine sandpaper paste that grinds the rollers down with every use. The result is a door that was probably hard to open for months before it became impossible to ignore.
Less commonly, the issue is structural: a door frame that has shifted due to foundation settling or seasonal wood expansion can cause the door to bind in its frame rather than in its track. This is a different problem with a different fix, and it's worth ruling out the roller-and-track causes first before assuming a structural issue.

A sliding door that's hard to open tends to get opened and closed less often — which sounds harmless until you realize that a door left partially ajar for ventilation, or one that doesn't seat fully in its frame when "closed," is a meaningful security and energy problem. Beyond that, the mechanical issue almost never resolves on its own. Worn rollers continue to wear. A dirty track accumulates more debris. I'd been fighting this door for probably two years. Finally got down and looked at the track with a flashlight — it was absolutely packed with dust, dog hair, and what looked like old lubricant that had turned into a gray paste. Cleaned everything out with a stiff brush and a damp cloth, sprayed the track with a dry silicone spray, and the door slid like it was new. I felt foolish for waiting so long.

Cleaning the track didn't fully solve it for me — the door was better but still dragged. Turned out the rollers themselves were the problem; one had cracked and was essentially a flat spot that was grinding into the track. Ordered a replacement set for $22 online using the brand stamped on the door frame, swapped them out in about 45 minutes. That did it. The track cleaning was still worth doing first — just wasn't the whole answer in my case.

Mine was a different situation — the door had dropped and was dragging on the track rather than rolling on it. There are adjustment screws on the bottom of the door panel that raise or lower the rollers, and raising them just a few millimeters lifted the door clear of the track. I didn't know those screws existed until I read about it. Now I feel like I should check them once a year as maintenance.
