I replaced seven windows in our 1962 ranch with ENERGY STAR double-pane vinyl inserts — not full-frame, just pocket replacements — and I'm genuinely glad we did it. Three of the old windows had completely failed seals (that permanent fogging between the panes), two had rotted sill corners, and one had a cracked pane we'd taped over for two winters. The insert replacements cost us $4,400 total including installation. Our heating and cooling bills didn't drop dramatically but the comfort difference in the rooms that face north is real and immediate. For our situation — genuine structural failure on multiple units — it made sense.

We replaced all 14 windows in our 1978 two-story — full-frame, name-brand, ENERGY STAR certified, the whole thing — and spent about $19,000. Our gas bills went down roughly $45/month compared to the prior year, which is maybe $540 a year. At that rate we're looking at a 35-year payback on energy savings alone. The windows look great, our home appraised slightly higher, and the cold spots by the living room window are gone. But I won't pretend the energy math works out. If I were doing it over I'd have started with air sealing and done the windows room by room as they actually needed it instead of all at once.
