I'd had a wet corner in my basement for three years and assumed I needed a sump pump. Before calling anyone, I extended my two downspouts with those cheap accordion extenders — $8 each at the hardware store — and raked a bag of topsoil to slope the ground away from that corner. The next three rainstorms: completely dry. I genuinely can't believe it was that simple. Would absolutely do it again before spending a dollar on anything else.

My basement had a hairline crack running vertically about 18 inches down the wall that wept water every time we had more than half an inch of rain. I used a polyurethane injection kit from the home center — it took maybe 90 minutes and cost $45. That was eight months ago and four major rainstorms later. The crack has not moved a drop. I did also clean my gutters at the same time so I can't be 100% sure which one did it, but I'd do both again regardless.

I did the grading and downspout work and it cut the problem by maybe 70%. The basement is much better — before I'd get an inch of water across half the floor after a heavy rain, now it's just a damp patch in one corner. I think I still have a crack somewhere that I haven't located yet. Going to wait for the next big rain and actually watch the walls to find the entry point before I do anything else. The exterior work was still absolutely worth doing first.
