Popular approaches that won't actually solve this
Most of what gets recommended for a musty basement smell addresses the odor itself rather than the biology producing it — which means the smell keeps coming back.

Masking the smell with air fresheners or baking soda — These products do nothing to reduce humidity or kill mold; they simply compete with the MVOC molecules for your attention, and the moment you stop using them the musty odor returns unchanged. Some aerosol fresheners can also irritate airways already sensitized by mold exposure.

Spraying bleach on visible surfaces "just in case" — Bleach kills surface mold on non-porous materials but does not penetrate porous surfaces like drywall, wood framing, or concrete block where hidden mold typically grows; it also does nothing for the moisture driving regrowth, so mold returns within weeks. On porous materials, bleach can leave behind residual moisture that actually encourages regrowth.

Applying interior waterproofing paint without fixing drainage first — Hydraulic cement and waterproofing paint can slow minor seepage through pores, but they cannot withstand sustained hydrostatic pressure from poorly drained soil. If water is being pushed against your foundation, paint will eventually blister and peel — while the moisture continues to enter through any unsealed crack or joint.

Buying an ozone generator to "eliminate" the odor — Ozone generators are marketed aggressively for mold odors and do temporarily neutralize some MVOCs. However, at concentrations effective against mold odors, ozone is a lung irritant, the EPA explicitly recommends against their use in occupied spaces, and they do not address the moisture source — so the smell returns once ozone levels dissipate.

I'd been running a dehumidifier for two years thinking it was "handling" the problem, but the smell never fully went away. Did the plastic-sheet test on a whim after reading something like this — moisture was clearly on the wall side near the back corner. Turned out the downspout extension had detached and was dumping water right against the foundation. Reattached it and regraded about three feet of soil, and six weeks later the smell is genuinely gone. Dehumidifier still runs but it barely collects anything now.

Our basement had that smell every winter and I always assumed it was just "old house." Finally bought a $15 hygrometer and was shocked — humidity was sitting at 74% consistently. The plastic sheet test showed condensation on the room side, not seepage, so the fix was ventilation rather than waterproofing. We added a small exhaust fan on a timer and a decent dehumidifier. Got humidity down to 48% and the smell disappeared within two weeks. I wish someone had told me to check the humidity years ago.

Did the plastic-sheet test, found seepage. Sealed three visible cracks with hydraulic cement myself and the smell improved about 60–70%. But it didn't fully go away, especially after heavy rain. Had a waterproofing contractor come out and he found two more cracks behind where an old storage shelf was built against the wall — I never would have found those myself. The full interior drain tile system they installed was expensive ($5,800) but the basement is genuinely dry now for the first time in probably 20 years. The DIY sealing was worth doing first to understand the scope, but I needed the pro to finish the job.
