Why your smart home devices can't hold a WiFi connection

Smart home devices — bulbs, plugs, thermostats, cameras, doorbells, sensors — are almost universally designed to connect on the 2.4 GHz WiFi band, not 5 GHz. That band has excellent range, but it's also the most congested radio frequency in any neighborhood, shared by neighboring routers, baby monitors, microwaves, and cordless phones. When your device is sitting at the edge of its signal range, or when local interference spikes, it loses its grip on the network and drops. The router may or may not notice quickly, and the device may not successfully reconnect on its own — so it just sits offline until you manually restart it.

A second, less obvious cause is how your router manages IP addresses. Most home routers assign addresses through DHCP with a lease time — typically 24 hours. When that lease expires, the device has to request a renewal. Low-power smart home devices sometimes fail to complete this handshake cleanly, especially if they've gone into a sleep state. The result looks identical to a signal drop: the device goes offline for no apparent reason. Firmware bugs in the device itself can make this worse, and devices from some manufacturers have a well-documented history of poor reconnection logic.

Finally, network congestion matters more than most people realize. A single modern router handling 25 or more simultaneous connections — phones, tablets, laptops, and a growing fleet of smart home gadgets — can struggle to keep all of them active. The weakest devices, which use the least power and transmit the least aggressively, are the first to get bumped.     My Ring doorbell and two Wyze cameras kept going offline every night around 3am. I thought it was a power issue. It was actually the DHCP lease renewal — my router was set to renew every 24 hours and something in the handshake was failing for those three devices specifically. I set them to static IPs in the router's DHCP reservation table and haven't had a single drop since.
