My stain turned out to be condensation from the HVAC duct, not a roof leak at all. The giveaway was that it appeared even on dry days in winter. I insulated the section of duct running through the unconditioned attic space and the stain stopped completely. I did repaint the ceiling once it dried out — used Zinsser BIN shellac primer first, then two coats of ceiling paint, and it hasn't bled back. Good to know the actual cause before throwing money at a roofer.

I found the wet spot in the attic and traced it back to what looked like a flashing problem at the chimney. I tried to seal it myself with roofing cement and it held for about three weeks, then the stain came back bigger. Eventually had a roofer come out — turns out the counter-flashing was completely separated from the mortar joint, which roofing cement can't permanently fix. He re-tuckpointed and replaced the step flashing for around $900. Not a cheap lesson, but I'm glad I at least confirmed the location before he got there — saved diagnostic time and he confirmed my attic observation was correct. DIY sealant bought time but wasn't the real fix for a chimney job.
