I was absolutely convinced the motor was dead — it made zero sound, nothing at all when I hit the switch. Looked under the sink on a whim and found the reset button had popped out maybe a quarter inch. Pushed it back in, tried the switch, and it ran perfectly. Took literally 45 seconds. I felt a little silly but also relieved I didn't call a plumber first like I was about to.

Mine was humming but not moving at all — that low buzzing sound you get when the plate is stuck. Turned off the breaker, dug out an Allen wrench (the 1/4" fit perfectly in the hole on the bottom), and worked it back and forth for about 30 seconds until it freed up. Fished out a small piece of broken ceramic with a fork. Pressed the reset button, flipped the breaker back on, and it's been running fine for six weeks. The hex wrench trick is real and it works.

The reset button fix worked temporarily — ran for about a week and then went dead again under normal use. Turned out the motor was overheating because the unit was 14 years old and on its last legs. The reset was just delaying the inevitable. I ended up replacing the whole unit myself with an InSinkErator Badger 5 — it fit right onto the existing sink mount without any changes. The replacement took me about an hour and cost $110. Wish I'd just done it from the start once it kept tripping, but I understand why the reset is the right first step.
