I was convinced I needed a plumber. Toilet had been rocking for a couple months and I kept putting it off. Watched a few videos, bought a pack of plastic shims for $4, slid them under the left side, tightened the nuts a half-turn each, trimmed the shims with a box cutter and caulked around the base. Took maybe 25 minutes. Completely solid now and that was three weeks ago. Wish I'd done it sooner.

The bolts on ours were finger-loose — I could actually wiggle them by hand. Tightened them down carefully (stopped when I felt resistance, didn't go crazy with the wrench) and the rocking stopped immediately. No shims needed, no caulk, nothing. I did put a tiny bead of caulk around the front just to tidy it up. Total cost: zero, I already had the wrench. The fix people overthink this.

Shimming stopped most of the rocking but the toilet still had a tiny bit of give to it. Turned out one of the closet bolts was spinning — the flange slot it was sitting in was worn out. Picked up a flange repair kit at the hardware store for $14, which gave the bolt a solid anchor. After that it was completely stable. The shim step wasn't wasted — it told me the floor was also uneven — but I did need the extra step for the bolt. Whole project took maybe 45 minutes spread over two trips to the hardware store.
